Cotton Lawn Fabric

Cotton lawn is a finely woven, soft fabric that's lightweight and semi-transparent - crisp enough to hold a tuck or pleat, yet cool and comfortable against the skin. It's woven from fine, high-count yarns, which is what gives it that smooth, almost silky hand and its delicate translucency. Once used mainly for children's clothing, lawn is now printed in sophisticated, beautiful designs for ethereal blouses and dresses. When you want something cool, soft, and comfortable but not completely sheer, lawn is the answer.

How to sew cotton lawn

Pretreatment

Because of the fabric's delicate nature, hand washing is recommended. Use cool water and a drop of baby shampoo, and dry flat. Press with a steam iron to remove any residual wrinkling.

Needles & thread

Choose the smallest needle you can easily thread - a 75/11 is the largest you'll want to use. Cotton embroidery thread is finer than standard construction thread and is a good match for such a fine fabric; fine cotton "tanne" heirloom thread is another excellent choice. If you can't find these, use an all-cotton sewing thread.

Seams, seam finishes & hems

French seams are the traditional choice. Stitch the seam wrong sides together at 3/8", trim the excess from the seam allowance, and press it open; then turn the fabric right sides together and stitch again at 1/4". You'll love the professional, enclosed finish. For hems, use a double-folded topstitched hem or a hand-rolled hem.

Interfacing

To preserve the semi-transparent quality, choose a solid-colored sew-in interfacing such as silk organza or cotton organdy.

What to make with cotton lawn

Lawn shines with sewn detail - tucks, pleats, and shirring - and is beautiful for blouses, dresses, soft skirts, and shawls.

Creative possibilities

Try a wing needle or a denim needle to create a hemstitched look: back the fabric with a wash-away stabilizer and choose an entredeux or point de Paris stitch on your machine. The little "holes" make a delicate detail that suits the fabric perfectly. You can also add glass beading, lace, or ruffles - just keep added details as lightweight as possible to maintain the soft drape.

A storage tip

Store your lawn garments folded, rather than hung on hangers.

FAQ

What is cotton lawn fabric?

Cotton lawn is a fine, lightweight, semi-sheer plain-weave cotton woven from high-count yarns, giving it a smooth hand and crisp drape - ideal for blouses, dresses, and heirloom sewing.

How do you sew cotton lawn?

Use a fine needle (75/11 or smaller) and fine cotton thread, French seams for an enclosed finish, and a sew-in interfacing like silk organza to keep the fabric's translucency.

Is cotton lawn see-through?

It's semi-transparent - softer and more opaque than a true sheer, but light enough that linings or sheer sew-in interfacings are often used.

How do you finish cotton lawn seams?

French seams are traditional: stitch wrong sides together at 3/8", trim and press, then stitch right sides together at 1/4" to enclose the raw edges.
